Rooted in Compassion

When one local senior first walked into Dedicated Senior Medical Center of North Lakeland, his body was exhausted, his mobility tied to a walker and his calendar dominated by frequent hospital stays. For months, severe anemia had drained his strength while a fragmented healthcare system failed to uncover why. That changed when he sat across from Dr. Alexis Rodriguez, Internal Medicine Board Certified physician and medical director of Dedicated Senior Medical Center of North Lakeland.
Dr. Rodriguez did not rush the visit; he listened. By digging into the root cause of the man’s low hemoglobin and tailoring a focused treatment plan, the transformation was swift. Weeks later, the patient stepped through the front doors under his own power, with no walker in sight.
It is a recurring story Dr. Rodriguez often sees. Another local patient had consulted 15 different physicians, all of whom urged insulin injections despite her debilitating fear of needles. Dr. Rodriguez took a different approach, partnering with her to stabilize her A1C levels without needles for three years running.
Reflecting on his patient-first philosophy, Dr. Rodriguez notes, “What makes a big difference in a doctor is to listen…and sit with a patient to really understand what’s going on.”
Dr. Rodriguez believes that listening is the most potent diagnostic tool available in the usually fast-paced medical environment that can be normalized, especially in Central Florida, to ensure seniors feel like much more than numbers on a chart,
Dedicated Senior Medical Center operates on a value-based, frequent-touch model designed specifically for seniors age 65 and older. Unlike traditional fee-for-service practices, Dedicated operates on a preventive approach focused on patient outcomes rather than visit volume. This framework encourages doctors to see patients every few weeks if needed, allowing care teams to catch subtle changes in diabetes, blood pressure, or heart conditions before they spiral into medical crises.
Emphasizing the collaborative nature of this care, Dr. Rodriguez explains, “As long as the patient and doctor work like a team, we’re gonna have results at the end of the day.”
That high-frequency touch point fosters a deep, trust-filled bond, evolving routine office visits into lasting relationships. Recognizing that physical wellness is deeply intertwined with emotional and social health, the clinic provides an array of services under one roof. Patients can access an on-site pharmacy, stepping out the door with prescribed medications in hand. The facility also features podiatry, acupuncture, Tai Chi classes for balance, art sessions, haircuts and weekly bingo games. For seniors who might otherwise suffer from isolation, the center serves as a vibrant community hub where quality care and camaraderie intersect.
Dedicated Senior Medical Center is a national entity that was launched 20+ years ago and has locations across the country, including more than 20 within a 100-mile radius of Lakeland.
For Dr. Rodriguez, this work is deeply meaningful. Raised in a humble, hardworking family in Lares, Puerto Rico alongside two brothers, he learned early that determination could overcome financial barriers. He earned his medical degree through the public university system in Puerto Rico, specializing in internal medicine due to his love for its complex, puzzle-solving nature. But after Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017, followed by the birth of his eldest son, Rodriguez and his wife began praying about their family’s future. In 2020, they made the decision to relocate to Central Florida.
Today, Dr. Rodriguez and his wife, Dr. Natalia Ferrer, a fellow internal medicine physician, are raising their two young sons, Fernando, 4, and Diego, 6, in Lakeland. Their boys attend local schools, including Lakeland Christian School and Innovation VPK. The family has fully embraced the local lifestyle, including booking direct flights home to Puerto Rico out of Lakeland Linder International Airport rather than commuting to larger airports.
For Rodriguez, faith remains the cornerstone of his daily work. He firmly believes God places a person wherever He needs them most. In the clinic he leads that mission translates to advocating for senior health and providing bilingual care to a growing Hispanic community. Through compassion, accessibility, and consistent care, Rodriguez is helping local seniors live healthier, fuller lives right at home.
“I truly love having the opportunity to make a difference for others,” Dr. Rodriguez reflects. “The most satisfying part is helping seniors overcome challenges and improve their quality
of life.”
