Building Hope
Publix Super Markets Charities donates $3 million to housing and shelter programs throughout the Southeast
Publix continues to expand its impact on the Southeast region by committing to build stronger communities through a $3 million donation to housing and shelter programs. The donation will directly support 121 Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout the Southeast, including funding for a total of six full houses at six affiliates- one of which is in Lakeland.
Publix, a supporter of Habitat for Humanity for over 30 years, noticed that access to affordable housing had been strained the last few years due to the pandemic. Because of this, Publix Super Markets Charity is giving Lakeland Habitat for Humanity $90,000 to build a new home for one particular family. In addition, 104 nonprofit organizations providing housing and shelter services will also receive funding. “There are far too many individuals and families in our communities without roofs over their heads,” said PSMC Executive Director Kelly Williams-Puccio. “We’re committed to helping them find the support they need to one day achieve the stability and independence that comes from having a place to call their own. We’re honored to continue our support of organizations focused on housing and the well-being of our communities.”
Started in 1966 by Publix founder George W. Jenkins, Publix Super Markets Charities exists to meet the needs of the people in the communities amongst which Publix operates. “We’re incredibly grateful for Publix Super Markets Charities’ support of Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout the Southeast,” said Lakeland Habitat for Humanity CEO Claire Twomey. “Over the last couple of years, the lack of access to affordable housing has intensified due to the pandemic. But with Publix Charities’ generosity, we’re able to provide solid foundations for families through homeownership.”
