Locally Grown, Community Focused

Dr. Dustin Dixon, Optometrist, Vision First

When you see Dustin Dixon out and about, odds are it could be at the local theatre, coaching his kid’s youth sports team, sponsoring an event for a nearby school or church or out for a mountain bike ride.

When the proud Mulberry High School alum sees you, he is hoping that you can see well, because all week long he is focused on helping people prioritize their vision.

“We are invested in making our community better,” says Dixon, who has been an eyecare professional for more than a decade and opened Vision First on South Florida Avenue in 2024. “An integral part of that is providing support for people to achieve their best vision while looking good doing it.”

Alongside Lakelanders, Dr. Stuart Harrell and optician Brian Hayden—who have both served the community for decades—the team offers annual eye exams, medical exams and a large selection of high-quality eyewear at a competitive rate.

THE LAKELANDER
What inspired you to become a doctor?

DR. DIXON
My personal experience growing up needing eye care for school and sports. It seemed like a good way to help people.

Is there research or implementation of new technology you’ve been a part of in the medical field that you’re proud to share about?

DR. DIXON
Lenses for Myopia (nearsighted) control and new medications and treatments for dry eye and glaucoma. We provide rigid contact lenses to help people with scarred or irregular corneas.

What is the biggest challenge you face in modern medicine?

DR. DIXON
Dealing with insurances. I tell people all the time, “It’s not that we don’t accept your insurance, your insurance doesn’t accept us.”  This makes it much harder for people to “choose” their provider.

What do you love most about your profession?

DR. DIXON
It’s a satisfying experience when I am able to help someone that has gone to several other providers and has not been able to get help. A kid that is having a hard time seeing at school because they are nearsighted—that’s a fun visit.

THE LAKELANDER
What is something you would suggest more people do to take better care of themselves?

DR. DIXON
Good healthy habits are the biggest game changer. It can be as simple as a good diet and regular exercise and staying hydrated in this Lakeland heat.
