It’s Five O’ Clock on East Main

When Island Breeze Tiki Bar opens its doors at 201 E. Main St. in early October, owner Soloman Wassef hopes guests step inside and immediately leave the daily grind behind. For Wassef, the goal is simple: create a welcoming atmosphere where it always feels like “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” — a nod to the iconic Jimmy Buffett anthem—and give people, especially young professionals, a dedicated spot to put away their phones, unwind and reconnect through shared conversation and laughter.

“I just like for people, when they go somewhere, they don’t have to worry about their phones. They don’t have to worry about their work,” Wassef said. “We would like people to come in here and enjoy themselves, be happy and not worry. It’s a very relaxing atmosphere.”

Situated next to Black & Brew in Downtown Lakeland, the project earned approval from the City of Lakeland in 2023, but it has taken three-plus years due to unforeseen construction delays, a common occurrence when renovating historic buildings. Nonetheless, Wassef’s vision for the space remained focused. He recognized a distinct opportunity within the local nightlife landscape. While the downtown area boasts energetic daytime foot traffic and outstanding dining choices, Wassef saw room for a unique evening venue that keeps residents downtown after dinner or for a memorable night out.

Wassef’s roots in the local community span nearly three decades. Born in Israel, he left in 1980 with $500 in his pocket and moved to Waco, Texas, where he first entered the hospitality industry. He later moved to Central Florida and spent 20 years with Darden Restaurants, training general managers for Red Lobster locations across the region. In 2004, Wassef brought his expertise to Lakeland by opening Fresh Choice Plus on Kentucky Avenue. Later on he launched Hookah Palace on the same street. In 2017, he expanded his downtown footprint by opening Lakeland Loft, a sophisticated second-floor jazz and cigar lounge.

Now, directly below Lakeland Loft, Island Breeze Tiki Bar introduces a distinctive coastal theme to East Main Street.

The aesthetic transports patrons directly to the beach. The interior design showcases island decor, highlighted by a custom glossy bar top featuring vibrant artwork of ocean life. Visitors can capture memories in an oversized photo-ready Adirondack chair or relax on the expansive covered front patio fitted with fans and TVs. The soundtrack will echo tropical island beats, and Wassef says there are plans for live weekend music and local steel drum performances.

While the bar will not serve food, its drink menu is designed to offer a taste of paradise. Wassef crafted a selection of classic tropical cocktails made with premium mixers, including daiquiris, pina coladas and Mai Tais—his personal favorite drink. Emphasizing quality presentation, Wassef shuns dried garnishes in favor of fresh edible fruit, especially pineapple slices. The menu also caters to non-drinkers with refreshing mocktails, including alcohol-free pina coladas and strawberry daiquiris, alongside a selection of domestic and import beers.

When opening day arrives, Wassef plans to take a moment to savor the achievement.

“When people are smiling and having a good time, that’s when I’ll know it’s what I wanted it to be,” Wassef said. And if all goes well, he plans on having a Mai Tai in hand while taking it all in.
